Follow the cross-country escapade of a young couple fleeing the mob in Runaway: A Road Adventure. Well-received in Europe prior to its North American release, Pendulo Studios' Runaway tells the story of Brian, a recent college graduate who is on his way to California when he accidentally befriends Gina, a New York club singer being pursued by an underground crime family. The two embark on a journey full of unexpected twists and turns. The graphics have the cartoonish look of a stylized comic book, while gameplay revolves around inventory-based puzzle-solving typical of the genre.
Your main character is Brian Basco, a recent graduate on his way from New York to California to start his doctoral studies at UC Berkeley. While running some last-minute errands, a beautiful singer named Gina runs in front of his car while trying to escape a pair of mafia goons. Brian, who apparently hasn't had a girlfriend in a very long time, falls for her immediately and gets suckered into Gina's predicament. And so begin the adventures that take him across the country as they try to find out why the mafia wants the crucifix Gina's father gave her before he died.
If either Brian or Gina were actually likable characters, it would be easy to sympathize with their troubles, but Gina is manipulative and Brian is a whiny weasel. Most of the other characters Brian and Gina meet are very interesting and generally more likable than they are. Despite these problems, the story is intriguing enough and has enough twists and turns to want to see it through.
One of the hallmarks of adventure games is the search for unusual quest items, and 'stealing' them is very often necessary. This isn't a problem in other games, but in Runaway, the thefts feel slimy. It's strange to feel guilt when you pick up an item belonging to another character in the game (and this comes from someone who steals everything not nailed down in RPGs). Brian tries to rationalize his larceny and destruction of property with flippant remarks such as, 'He probably won't mind,' or 'I'm sure she doesn't need this,' as he steals someone's shotgun, so perhaps it's the character's need for justification that makes the act feel worse than it is. (The decisions he made at the end of the game did nothing to improve my opinion of him, either.)
Meshcam art. Some of Runaway's story is told via attractively rendered 3D cutscenes, while others use the in-game engine. Graphically, Runaway is quite nice to look at. The characters are shaded and every one is completely unique. The rendered background artwork is cartoony and full of lots of little details. All that detail becomes a bit of the problem, however, as it can become very difficult to find some of the objects you need to complete your puzzles. Far too much of the game is a pixel hunt, and some of the objects you need blend in with their surroundings so well and have such a small activation boundary that it's almost luck when you stumble across them. It would be nice if adventure game designers would add a 'cheat' key to their games to light up every object on the screen that can be interacted with. Barring that, making items which can be picked up a bit more obvious would be nice.
As if that weren't enough, Runaway's pixel-hunting problem goes a step further. Some containers can be searched multiple times to find even more items. If you don't realize this while playing, you could easily become frustrated to the point of giving up on the game. Even worse, one container needs to be searched twice at one point, and after you complete another series of puzzles, you need to search it yet again -- that particular puzzle was just plain cruel. Not all the puzzles are this bad, however. Some of the puzzles are funny and interesting, though, and a joy to complete; in those cases, you can't help but smile when you complete the last step and see the results of your work.
The music in Runaway is worth noting. The title song is by the Spanish rock band, Liquor, and is terribly good in its own right. The in-game music is also nice and fits in well with every scene. The voice acting, on the other hand, is basically forgettable. Brian's voice is the most annoying because he whines all the time, made all the worse since he's the main character.
While all these problems would seem to imply the title is not worth downloading, the opposite is true. Runaway is actually a decent little adventure game. It's certainly not the best adventure game ever made, but it's not a disaster, either. The story and many of the puzzles are far too interesting to dismiss.

The Blue Jays couldn’t get a single run across the plate as they were beat by the Minnesota Twins 4-0.
MINNEAPOLIS — Fernando Romero‘s major league debut for Minnesota carried the extra weight of a Twins team that won only once in its previous 12 games.
No pressure, kid.
Well, he sure didn’t appear to feel any.
Romero kept Toronto scoreless while pitching into the sixth inning, giving the Twins a badly needed boost in a 4-0 victory over the Blue Jays on Wednesday.
“I can be here. I feel comfortable. I’ve got no excuses. I’m ready to work. I’m ready to compete,” Romero said, dismissing several questions from reporters about whether he felt first-start jitters.
Eddie Rosario homered for the Twins, who won for only the second time in their last 13 games. Romero (1-0) was a big reason why, striking out five in 5 2/3 innings while giving up four hits and three walks. Four relievers preserved the shutout, allowing only two singles the rest of the way.
After four of nine games were wiped out by wintry conditions during their first homestand this year, the Twins finally enjoyed some ideal spring weather upon their return to Target Field. Torrent smith micro poser pro 2014. They won only two of six games, though, avoiding an even worse outcome were it not for the strong right arm of the 23-year-old Romero.
“His stuff is alive,” manager Paul Molitor said, “and he made a lot of hitters uncomfortable.”
With a fastball clocking in at 95 mph or higher, Romero deftly worked out of two-on, one-out situations in the second, fourth and fifth innings. He struck out Teoscar Hernandez on a caught-stealing double play to end the third, when first base umpire Phil Cuzzi ruled Hernandez’s swing was not checked. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons argued from the dugout and was ejected by home plate umpire Dan Bellino. Gibbons was tossed for the first time this season, the 45th ejection of his career, and bench coach DeMarlo Hale took over.
In the fourth, Kendrys Morales, who homered twice on Tuesday, struck out to end the inning on an 87 mph slider in the dirt that was blocked by catcher Jason Castro. Hernandez hit into an inning-ending double-play groundball in the fifth.
“He was very confident in how he wanted to attack certain hitters and what he was looking to do,” Castro said. “That’s a great sign.”
Max Kepler, Robbie Grossman and Gregorio Petit drove in runs, and Joe Mauer, Eduardo Escobar and Rosario each had two hits for the Twins. They improved to just 19-39 against the Blue Jays since 2010, their second-worst winning percentage over that span against an American League opponent.
Marcus Stroman (0-4) had his best performance in six turns for the Blue Jays this season, his longest appearance and his first with fewer than four runs allowed. The right-hander gave up six hits, two runs and one walk in seven innings. He struck out five, effectively working a cut fastball into his repertoire.
“My stuff is getting better and better with each start,” Stroman said. “I know my work ethic. I know that I’m a horse. I know I’m going to get stronger and stronger as the year progresses.”
READY ROSARIO
In his last 36 home games since Aug. 8, Rosario is batting .343 with 13 homers, 10 doubles and 30 RBIs in 143 at-bats. That includes home runs in consecutive games against the Blue Jays on Sept. 16-17.
After focusing on hitting to all fields during his batting practice on Friday, Rosario went 5 for 12 in the series with four RBIs. The left-hander’s homer in the second inning reached the bullpen behind left-centre.
“He’s got power all over the field,” Molitor said. “Letting the ball travel. I think by doing that, for one, you’re going to see it a little bit longer, and you’ve probably got a better chance of keeping it in the zone.”
PILLAR OF THE LINEUP
Runaway A Road Adventure Patch
Kevin Pillar went 2 for 3 with a walk and took a hit from Brian Dozier with a diving catch in centre field in the seventh. He’s batting .361 with 13 extra-base hits and 11 RBIs in his last 19 games.
“It started in spring training,” Hale said. “When you really go back, he was playing pretty well and doing some things in spring training that kind of carried over to the season here. Really, that’s pitch selection and putting the barrel on the ball.”
TRAINER’S ROOM
Blue Jays: CF Curtis Granderson is healthy, but he went 0 for 9 with seven strikeouts in the series.
Twins: CF Byron Buxton will accompany the team on the upcoming 10-game road trip, after taking some swings in the batting cage on Tuesday. He has not been cleared to run yet, beyond on an anti-gravity treadmill. Placed on the DL with migraine headaches more than two weeks ago, Buxton has been recovering from a hairline fracture in his left big toe after fouling a ball off his foot on April 22 in a minor league game. Molitor said he might not need another rehab assignment.
UP NEXT
Blue Jays: LHP Jaime Garcia (2-2, 5.40 ERA) pitches on Thursday afternoon to start a straight doubleheader in a one-day stop in Cleveland, the result of a pair of rainouts on April 14 and 15. RHP Carlos Carrasco (4-1, 3.08 ERA) takes the mound for the Indians. RHP Joe Biagini will be called up from the minors to take the second game for the Blue Jays.
Twins: RHP Jake Odorizzi (2-2, 3.94 ERA) pitches on Thursday night to start a four-game series in Chicago. RHP Reynaldo Lopez (0-2, 1.78 ERA) takes the mound for the White Sox.
